Compromiise - oh, yeah. Sure, I'm fed up - we all are. Disgusted with people who can't run their own House (or Senate), borrow money with no sense of responsibility and not willing to "pay the piper."   Laws are weak. Society is disfunctional. The world is coming to an end. At least that's what the media says.

BUT, stop a moment. Think. This is what makes Amereica great. This is what went on at the Constitutional Convention. Arguement. Sides. Compromise. Justice in the end.    This is what makes us, this country.

Neurogenesis

Scientists have traced the pathway through which neural stem cells travel to repair the humnan brain. It's called the RMS - the ROSTRAL MIGRATORY STREAM. The brain is highly plastic. And it not only can create new neurons, it can modify networks of of those new neurons to changing circumstances. It's called Neurogenesis.

It was long thought that we were born with as many brain cells as we'll ever have. The brain never regenerates itself, regrows and replaces dead ones after injury or stroke.

My book, "Live or Die - A Stroke of Good Luck" tells why this is not true, that brain cells regenerate, new cells actually grow and replace dead ones. And, if this were not true, I wouldn't be alive, functioning, learning to play a new sport, writng a book.

An open letter to Mike Kelly and his wife,(Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords)

Dear Mr. Kelly:

If I knew how to reach you I'd send you my handbook of hope and how to help you and your wife to recover.
Congresswoman Giffords has had a horrific insult to her brain and bodily function. Her communicative skills, her "wiring" have been terribly impacted. But her progress, her actions say that although it'll take time, with the medical practice and science of today, it'll be 42 months, not the years it took me.
Please know that it can work and the two of you will make it work!

Live or Die - A Stroke of Good Luck

For years, accepted medical dogma said that once brain cells were destroyed, they were dead forever.
Neurogenesis didn't exist. Regeneration, never.
But, as that famous lyricist Gilbert astutely wrote: "Well, hardly ever!"
In 1968, I suffered a terribnle stroke, a cerebral hemhorrage that destroyed my brain. The damage was so severe that the doctors gave up. They believed me dead. They told my wife to make the final arrangements and my obituary was prepared.
The next morning I woke up.
That was 42 years ago. I am alive and am living proof that the brain regenerates.

Once upon a time, long, long ago, the doctors and scientists believed that once Brain Cells were destrroyed or otherwise met their demise...that was it, another man down forever. NOT ANY MORE. Most 80 year olds quietly live out their retirement playing golf and soaking up visits with the grandchildren. Not me. I decided to write this memoir to share the story of my recovery from a stroke I had—over 40 years ago—and offer inspiration to those who’ve shared the same ordeal. An accomplished television and advertising executive, I played an instrumental role in the development of some of the most memorable advertising campaigns and cultural icons, including the Fruit of the Loom characters and the smile on the PSA airplane.

I was declared dead at the age of 38 from a cerebral hemorrhage. Yet I managed to make a comeback without surgery or the technology of today’s medicine. My story offers a glimpse of my diagnosis and recovery. Live or Die: A Stroke of Good Luck aims to be an inspiration to victims of strokes or those who’ve suffered any major illness by showing how one’s life and values can change with each step of recovery.

I call it a Handbook of Hope.
